A One-of-a-Kind Building
Wolf had the honor and pleasure to help build a one-of-a-kind structure that will assist in restoring power back to the hundreds of thousands of Kansans in the event of an emergency. Wolf was tasked by Westar Energy to build a structure that would house specialized equipment that could be rapidly deployed to an area that may have suffered a catastrophic emergency that took out power and therefore life-saving services.
The innovative technology delivered by Siemens, specifically designed for quick response, will allow Westar to replace a large power transformer within days rather than the months it can take to transport and install an available unit. The new transformers are highly optimized for weight and dimension through advanced voltage and power rating. These transformers components must be available to be moved within hours of a disaster to the locations needed to restore power without the long lead time usually required to procure these pieces of equipment.
The transformers themselves are truly special, and they needed a special building to house them. The building needed to be secure and centrally located, and have access to routes anywhere in the state. The building itself needed to be able to withstand damage from variable sources from weather to terrorist attacks. In the Midwest, tornados are a major concern so the RRT Building was designed to withstand an EF5 tornado.
There is no other structure, or system, like this in the world. Westar was innovative and proactive in ensuring this concept became a reality to ensure their 690,000 customers have power after a devastating disaster. Wolf Construction assisted with the design, acted as the Construction Manager and self-preformed a majority of the work. Many Topeka based subcontractors furnished services to complete specialized portions of the project scope.
