The Tribute to Heroes award Luncheon honors individuals from the Topeka area who have saved another person’s life during the past year or who have positively impacted the quality of life in the Heartland in other ways.
This signature event, held each year, originates from the organization’s belief that qualities of bravery, commitment, dedication and selfless behavior should be recognized and honored.
Chad Shafstall, a Wolf Safety Representative, was spending his Monday lunch break by the Kansas River when he heard cries for help. Those cries came from Jennifer Webb, a woman unable to swim, who had become trapped by the fast moving currents that had risen to her neck. She held on a tree branch that extended out from the shore, but was unable to pull herself to safety. That’s when Chad sprung into action, utilizing skills he developed during his time as a coast guard, he entered the water and retrieved her, dragging her back to safety with one hand while bracing against the branch with the other. A deputy responding to the scene was en route during Chad’s rescue, and was grateful for his quick action, which resulted in only minor injuries. The American Red Cross is proud to recognize Chad Shafstall with this year’s Call to Action Award.
Wolf is so very proud of Chad and his quick thinking and bravery. Wolf is honored to have him be recognized for his actions and Wolf is proud to have him part of the Wolf family.
